An Original 1961 Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) A Bout de Souffle (released in the U.S. in 1961 as "Breathless"), the classic 1960 Jean-Luc Godard French New Wave romantic gangster crime thriller (about a small time thief who steals a car and murders a policeman, and he tries to persuade his beautiful American journalism student girlfriend to run away to Italy with him, but she has misgivings) starring Jean Seberg, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Daniel Boulanger, Jean-Pierre Melville, Henri-Jacques Huet, Liliane David, Claude Mansard, and Van Doude. Note that this movie, together with Francois Truffaut's "Les quatre cents coups" began the French "New Wave", which revolutionized film-making, not only in France, but the world over! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that while we have previously auctioned four examples of this half-sheet, all of those said "Released by Films Around the World" in the bottom right, while this one says "Released by Twentieth Century-Fox" in that area. One of those could predate the other, but we aren't sure (see below for what we know about the two different distributors). Also note that the other first release U.S. paper we have seen on this movie other than this half-sheet references the distributor as "Films Around the World", which this one does, but it also has a large "Released by Twentieth Century-Fox" at the bottom right. We have seen pressbooks that have "Released by Twentieth Century-Fox" on the back, and others where that area solely says "distributed by Films Around the World". We don't know if Fox originally intended to release the movie after the small distributor did, and then dropped out, or if there is a different explanation. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good.
