An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 27" x 39") (Learn More) Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Combined Circus, a 1935 poster featuring an image of Tim McCoy ("Col. Tim McCoy, the screen's greatest western star, who personally leads his thrilling new congress of Rough Riders and Indians at every performance"). Note that Tim McCoy left Hollywood in 1935 and, at that time, joined The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Circus. He was a great success drawing crowds in that circus, and he soon left it to form his own "Wild West Show", and unfortunately, due to the fact that the nation was hitting the heights of the Great Depression, his own show did poorly. Given this, we know this poster to be from 1935, even though it is not dated. If anyone knows more about this poster, please contact us and we will post it here. The modern version of the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. With weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus closed on May 21st, 2017 after 146 years. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 27" x 39". What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster at one time had a snipe glued to the bottom (no doubt giving play dates), and someone removed that snipe by cutting off the bottom blank border of the poster. It also had some tears and tiny paper loss around the edges and surface paper loss in the right of the bottom border, extending into the "C" of "PERFORMANCE". It was folded like a U.S. one-sheet with some minor wear on the folds, and some scattered minor smudges and a few tiny dot stains in the yellow background areas. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed onto a very thin linen a long time ago with no excess. The new owner of this poster could certainly have it removed from the thin linen and properly re-backed, but I could certainly imagine many people displaying it just as it is!
