An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Doctor X, the 1932 Michael Curtiz New York City serial killer horror murder cannibalism thriller ("Out-Thrills Them All!"; "The strangest love story ever told!"; "You'll never forget it as long as you live!"; "Mightier than words can describe!"; "The greatest mystery thriller of all time in perfect Technicolor"; based on the play by Howard W. Comstock & Allen C. Miller; a REALLY strange story about a serial killer who is dubbed "The Moon Killer", because he only kills at night, and he also cannibalizes his victims; a newspaper reporter starts working on the case and he comes to suspect that a scientist at the Academy of Surgical Research is responsible, but which one?; the academy is filled with very strange mad scientists, and the head of the academy, Dr. Xavier, who is nicknamed "Dr. X", is the strangest of the group!) starring Lionel Atwill (in the title role as Dr. Jerry Xavier), Fay Wray, Lee Tracy, Preston Foster, John Wray, and George Rosener. Note that it sure seems likely that when the X-Men were created, naming Professor Xavier was a tribute to this wild horror movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had very minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were well restored, OR it had some minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster had a 2" x 2" area of paper loss in the upper right border. It extends into the tip of the "R" of "DOCTOR", but is otherwise blank white paper and the image background to the left of it. There was an 8" irregular (but mostly horizontal) tear running from the top right border through the bottom of the "R" and the middle of the second "O" of "DOCTOR". There were several small tears in the right end of the top foldline (primarily in the upper right corner of the "X"). There was a 5" irregular slightly diagonal tear in the brown background at lower right between the lower right part of the "X" and the image of the woman. There were three 2" tears in the lower left corner of the "X". There were some tears and tiny areas of paper loss in the blank borders. Other than the above defects, this rare and wonderful poster was in surprisingly nice condition (it was found unused in an abandoned theater, and its colors are bright and fresh)! I gave the poster to Studio C, with instructions to solely repair the defects, and to avoid "over restoring" the poster, leaving alone any areas that did not need restoration. They really did a masterful job! I would bet that not one in one thousand collectors could find the replaced area in the top right border (even if they were staring straight at it) and I have no doubt that any other auction house would even reveal this restoration. As I write this, I am staring straight at the poster and I think it will display wonderfully on anyone's wall! Learn More about condition grades
