Date Sold 4/19/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Folded World War II Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 38" [72 x 97 cm]) (Learn More) This is Nazi Brutality, the 1942 U.S. World War II (WWII) Home Front poster ("Radio Berlin. -- It is officially announced: - all men of Lidice - Czechoslovakia - have been shot: The women deported to a concentration camp: The children sent to appropriate centers-- The name of the village was immediately abolished. 6/11/42/115P") featuring Ben Shahn art of a shackled and hooded Czechoslovakian man about to be executed. It was created by Shahn for the US Office of War Information as a response to the Nazi-led annihilation and destruction of communities throughout the Czech Republic, including Lidice. It also protests the retaliatory measures taken for the attempted assassination by Czech resistance members of Reinhard Heydrich, director of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, under the Nazi occupation. This poster certainly seems not only "heavy handed" to today's world, but outright "over the top", but of course America during World War II knew that the Nazis could potentially conquer the entire world and they wanted to make sure every citizen did all they could to keep that from happening, and posters like this certainly drove that message home! Artist: Ben Shahn Important Added Info: Note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: fair to good. Unfortunately, someone put much packing tape on the back of the poster along all of the foldlines and edges (apparently to reinforce it) and there is light rippling throughout. Other than the tape on the back, the poster is in generally nice condition and it seems very likely that a restored could remove the tape and after linenbacking the poster will surely display well.
