An Unfolded Special Poster (measures 17" x 22" [43 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Age Won't Protect You From AIDS, the 1990s poster created to educate people about HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which causes AIDS (Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome) and how to protect themselves from the disease. When AIDS gripped the world in 1981, local authorities, healthcare providers and governments quickly created health posters as a way to inform people about the new disease. These public health campaigns continued for over 20 years and still endure in some parts of the world today. The posters show the different tactics, images (some quite provocative) and messages used by various countries and health agencies in their attempts to educate people about the AIDS/HIV threat. Around 1.1 million people are living with HIV in the United States of America. Nearly one in seven of these people are unaware they have HIV, and since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, 692,790 people have died of AIDS-related illnesses. The USA is the greatest funder of the global response to HIV, but also has an ongoing HIV epidemic itself, with around 37,600 new infections a year. President Obama created the USA's first National HIV/AIDS Strategy in 2010. This was updated in 2015 to run until 2020, and is structured around four core aims: reducing new HIV infections, increasing access to care and improving health outcomes for people living with HIV, reducing HIV-related disparities and health inequities and achieving a coordinated national response to the epidemic. It has been said that President Trump's continued proposals to heavily reduce America's spending on HIV poses a significant threat to the progress that has been made in the epidemic to date, both domestically and globally.
