An Original Vintage 6" x 8" [15 x 20 cm] News Photo (Learn More)

Norma Shearer was the great MGM leading lady of the 1920s and 1930s. She was married to studio head Irving Thalberg in 1927, and that seemed to greatly help her career, and his untimely death in 1936 seemed to coincide with the decline of her career. But that is probably really unfair, because while her marriage to Thalberg greatly helped her get top parts, she did wonderfully in many major movies! Some of her movies include: Romeo & Juliet (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), The Barretts of Wimpole Street, Marie Antoinette (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), The Divorcee (winner of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Escape, Free Soul (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Their Own Desire (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and The Women. She passed away in 1983 at the age of 80. AND Marie Dressler was a Canadian actress from the 1910s to the 1930s. She was born in 1868, and was on Broadway in her 20s, and in 1914, starred in "Tillie's Punctured Romance" over a very young Charlie Chaplin; but her career waned and she quit films a few years later returning to Broadway, and by the late 1920s, her career seemed over; but legendary producer Irving Thalberg cast her in "Anna Christie" in 1930, and she rapidly became a major star, in spite of her advanced age and plain face, appearing in many of MGM's greatest movies, as well as a series of very successful comedies; she received the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill in 1930, and is probably best remembered for her role in Dinner at Eight; sadly, she died of cancer in 1934 at the age of 65. Some of her other movies include: The Patsy, Tugboat Annie, Emma (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and The Girl Said No
Important Added Info: Note that this news photo, which measures 6" x 8" [15 x 20 cm], shows that the current tradition of having last year's winner present the award to this year's winner was already in effect in 1931, when Marie Dressler was given her Best Actress Oscar by Norma Shearer, who had won the previous year.
