Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this "other company" one-sheet! It has completely different art from either of the "regular" one-sheets (and those one-sheets are also quite rare). This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, with some tiny tears and separation on parts of some folds. It had pinholes around the edges and a small stain in the lower right border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Note that the restorer left a tiny bit of excess linen around all four sides of the poster (they left a small border in order to protect the poster from handling damage, but they did not leave a larger border, to allow it to more easily fit in a frame). Someone once framed the poster and they apparently held it in place by gluing the back of the linen to foamcore, and at a later date, someone removed almost all of the foamcore from the back of the linen, except for some on the back of the left and right borders (which does not affect the front and could certainly be removed).
