Join U.S. Marine Corps, the 1941 U.S. World War II (WWII) recruitment poster ("Apply to nearest recruiting station") encouraging men to join the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and featuring James Montgomery Flagg art of a Marine standing in full uniform with a rifle and bayonet in one hand and an outstretched arm beckoning the viewer to join the Marines. Note that this was artwork created by Flagg during World War I for use as a World War I Marine recruiting poster, and immediately after Pearl Harbor, this art was pulled out and used for this World War II recruiting poster, which was created on December 13, 1941 (the poster is dated at bottom left), which explains why the Marine is wearing a World War I uniform, which was no longer in use in 1941. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: James Montgomery Flagg Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had six unevenly spaced partial horizontal creases, as though the poster was roughly handled when it was rolled. There were some creases and small tears on parts of some of those horizontal creases, more so in the center of the word "WANT" at top left. There were pinholes, creases, smudges, and light stains around the edges of the poster, with tiny paper loss in the top right blank corner. There were some faint water stains scattered through the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer linenbacked the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting from any reasonable viewing distance (for me personally, they make it clear that the poster is a genuine 1941 original, and not any sort of repro, and I personally don't mind the signs of age on the poster at all, because it still displays quite well). But anyone who did feel the above defects were distracting could certainly have the poster professionally re-backed, and after proper restoration, it will look fantastic!
