An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Presskit (measures 11" x 16" [28 x 41 cm]; contains 33 supplements, and 22 stills) (Learn More) The Desperate Hours, the 1955 William Wyler crime hostage thriller ("Adapted from the novel and play by Joseph Hayes"; based on a real-life story of a family taken hostage in their own home by escaped convicts; the person whose life this was based on sued for invasion of privacy, but he was ruled a "public figure" by the Supreme Court, and this was the first such case, and now means that public figures have no ability to restrict invasion into their privacy!) starring Humphrey Bogart, Fredric March, Arthur Kennedy, Martha Scott, Dewey Martin, Gig Young, Mary Murphy, and Richard Eyer. An interesting piece of trivia is that the lawyer who defended the real life family in the Supreme Court case to try to preserve their right to privacy was Richard Nixon, later President of the United States! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a pretty amazing presskit, for two reasons. First, because it is clearly one of the very earliest presskits ever! It is not in a standard folder, but is sent in a legal sized (11" x 16") "portfolio" that has a bound in elastic band that can be put around it. It contains 33 supplements printed on 9" x 14" sheets, but otherwise, they are exactly like supplements in later years, with descriptions of the movie, biography of the stars and director, and much more, including a "one-minute interview with Humphrey Bogart" and another with Fredric March! There is also a folded 11" x 17" sheet telling about the Tony Award that the play won and another folded sheet that has "The Story in Pictures". There are also 20 stills, some of which have printed snipes, and many of which are candid. There are two 10" x 13" deluxe stills showing scenes from the movie with snipes on the back, but it is the one final item in the presskit that is the other reason why this is so amazing. It is an envelope addressed to "Miss Nevart Apikian" who was a movie reviewer for the Syracuse Post Standard at that time! In the envelope is an invitation to a "special press preview party" for the movie that was held September 19, 1955, and there is a second page from "Rufus Blair" of the Paramount Press Department telling Miss Apikian to drop in before the dinner, and that he and she would have "one or more from a bottle which should be a challenge to your liquid capacity"! It is important to note that a few of the supplements have areas underlined by Ms. Apikian, from when she was writing her review. We have never seen this wonderful super early presskit before, and even if another example exists with all these contents, it would not of course have the invitation to the press party that this one does! Also note that we have taken a picture of the cover of the presskit, all of the stills, and many of the other items described above, except for the supplements, where we only pictured one. Condition: very good to fine. The contents of this unusual presskit are mostly in really nice condition (see our many images). Many of the presskits we are auctioning this week were carefully stored away for many years, and the stills are in really excellent condition. Sometimes the folder that contains the stills has some minor wear on it, and you should be able to see that in our super-sized image. Learn More about condition grades
