Date Sold 12/19/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) a 1930s cowboy western stock poster ("The great Buck Jones"; "The mighty ace of action stars"; "His newest thrill-a-minute action picture") created by Universal Pictures for use by theaters showing Buck Jones movies. Theaters would order this poster which had a large blank area, and sometimes the studio would overprint the stock poster with the title of a specific movie, and sometimes they were sent a series of large paper snipes with the titles of specific entries of the series, thus getting many posters for the price of one. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this really cool stock insert! Note that this poster has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the poster onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the poster still looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the poster no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with posters that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the posters it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Note that this poster was gel backed, and while it could be rolled and sent in a tube, we would worry that doing so would either damage the poster or bring back the folds. Therefore, we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package. However, if the new buyer insists, we will send it in a tube, but only if they accept responsibility for doing so. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The poster had creases, small tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of the folds, and creases, small tears, and smudges around the edges. It had faint staining in the bottom blank area, no doubt caused by a title snipe that was there. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to restoration. Given the poster's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration, especially from up close, and the poster displays pretty well from a reasonable viewing distance (see our super-sized image to get a good sense of exactly how the poster looks now).
