Date Sold 8/16/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo, the 1937 Eugene Forde Monaco Asian detective mystery crime gambling casino thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; "Original Story by Robert Ellis and Helen Logan") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Virginia Field, Sidney Blackmer, Harold Huber, Kay Linaker, and Robert Kent. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! We have never auctioned it before, and we have only previously auctioned three scene cards! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card had a scratch and staining in the center of Oland's forehead above his eyebrows, and someone performed restoration to the front of that area. There was a 1/2" tear in the bottom of the right blank border and it was repaired with glue from the back (it once had a piece of tape on the back that was removed, and there is surface paper loss on the back of that area, but it does not affect the front). There is an area of surface paper loss on the back of the top center where a piece of tape was removed (it also did not affect the front). There were a few tiny pinholes in each corner that had slight restoration. Other than the above defects, the card was in surprisingly nice condition. The restoration in Oland's forehead is noticeable, but there was shading in that area before it received the scratch and stain, so don't think that his forehead was an even color prior to restoration (if you compare this restored card to an unrestored example, it is not that different, but as we said, it is clearly noticeable). The other restoration was performed well, but we leave it to bidders to decide how important these defects and restoration are (and of course, one could always choose to have additional restoration performed to this very rare card).
