An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Dead Men Tell, the 1941 Harry Lachman detective mystery crime thriller (Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers; "Aboard a treasure ship Chan battles his most elusive adversary... The ghost of a pirate 100 years dead!"; "Dead Men Tell No Tales!"; "Dead men do tell tales... and Charlie Chan is there to listen... as he battles the ghost of a pirate 100 years dead - for $60,000,000 in buried treasure!") starring Sidney Toler ("as Charlie Chan"), Sheila Ryan, Robert Weldon, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Sen Yung"; as Jimmy Chan), Don Douglas, Katharine Aldridge, George Reeves, Truman Bradley (as the pirate's ghost), Milton Parsons, and Charles Tannen. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Note that not only does our current auction of 999 stills represent the absolute finest selection we have ever had in terms of quality of image and film, but it also represents the finest CONDITION group of stills we have ever had! Half of the stills are graded as being in "very good to fine" condition (which is our highest grade for vintage stills), but we were very strict on this, because otherwise, perhaps two thirds or three quarters of the stills would have received this grade! We downgraded stills to "very good" for pretty minor defects, and many of these might have received our "very good to fine" grade in the past. And the half of the stills that ARE in very good to fine condition would likely be graded "mint" by any other auction!
