Date Sold 12/8/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Style B One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Zaza, the 1939 George Cukor France romantic love triangle melodrama ("From the play by Pierre Berton and Charles Simon"; about a sexy singer in a French music hall who falls in love with a married aristocrat; Colbert plays a part that five years before would surely have been played by Marlene Dietrich!) starring Claudette Colbert (in the title role as Zaza), Herbert Marshall, Bert Lahr, Helen Westley, Constance Collier, Genevieve Tobin, Walter Catlett, and Ann Todd (not the famous actress, but a child actress with the same name, who was the fourth cousin of the wife of Abraham Lincoln!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this style B one-sheet before (and we have only auctioned the style A poster one time). What is especially unusual about this poster is that it is basically a "teaser" poster, from long before the time when studios routinely created such "teaser" posters! It is clearly marked "1-B", but it only has a full wonderful image of Claudette Colbert with her name and the title, while the style A poster has full credits. Note that all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson. Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since! But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world! Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions! As noted above, all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I come from this more remarkable collection (the 28 that do not were consigned to us by other collectors, and are clearly marked). This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase folded one-sheets (all of which have had no professional restoration) from one of the greatest one-sheet collections assembled! Note that this one-sheet is from the category that Dominique Besson collected on that he labeled "Pin Up". Condition: good. The poster has an extra vertical fold 1/2" to the left of the regular vertical fold. There is small separation at each crossfold, with tiny paper loss at the top and bottom crossfolds. There are small horizontal tears between the two vertical folds in the top and bottom quarters. The poster has some light extra vertical creases and some extra creases scattered throughout. There is water staining across the bottom of the poster just slightly entering the background in a couple of places (see our image). The poster was likely displayed in a frame, which caused the back to darken somewhat. There is a small piece of clear tape on the back of the bottom two crossfolds. This is the sort of poster that responds really well to professional restoration. It is likely that most of the extra creases will be greatly lessened during the mounting process and the water stains in the bottom can likely be removed chemically, and with some simple touch up once the poster is mounted, the poster will look fantastic (and it will likely require little paint restoration). Once the poster is restored, the new owner will have a wonderful poster (that we have never seen before) to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
