An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Moby Dick, the 1930 Lloyd Bacon ocean sailing sailor whale hunting whaling melodrama ("Thar she blows!"; a very loose adaptation of the classic novel by Herman Melville) starring John Barrymore (as Captain Ahab), Joan Bennett (as Faith Mapple), Lloyd Hughes, Noble Johnson (as Queequeg), and John Ince (as Reverend Mapple). Note that this movie had a very early experimental widescreen sequence, which occurs when the boats first go after the whale! The image on the screen actually widened, and then went back to normal after that sequence. Also note that John Barrymore had made a silent version of this classic novel in 1926, which was called "The Sea Beast", which makes us suspect that they did not purchase the rights from Melville's estate. That was likely corrected four years later in this sound version, which has the same title as the novel, but it again was a very loose adaptation, following the 1926 version, and not the novel. There were a few minor adaptations in the years after, but the most notable one is the John Huston 1956 version, with Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab!
