A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 42" x 62 1/2" [107 x 159 cm]) (Learn More)

E. Billard, the circa 1900s French advertising poster (with taglines that translate to "At the Geneva factories. Watchmaking. Jewelry store. Goldsmith. Specialty for weddings. Free shipping of the catalog on request") promoting a store in La Rochelle, which was offering clocks, watches, precious gems, jewelry, and more. The store specialized in weddings and offered a free catalog, and this poster features Raoul Edward Hem art of a woman with many of the products available from the store laid out on a table. Note that Hem was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, and he studied in Paris. He exhibited several lithograph series at the Salon des Artistes Francais in the first decade of the 19th Century. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Artist: Raoul Edward Hem
Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned an example of this poster three times, and that same poster has been reconsigned to us again, so this is STILL the only example we have ever auctioned!

Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had appears to have never been folded. It had tiny brown stains scattered in all the white background areas, but otherwise, the poster was in nice condition prior to linenbacking (see our image). The poster was well backed, and the person who backed it did not address the tiny brown stains (or they were acquired after the poster was backed).
