An Original Vintage Theatrical Uruguayan Movie Herald (measures 4 1/4" x 5 3/4" [11 x 15 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) The Petrified Forest, the classic 1936 Archie Mayo romantic crime thriller ("From Leslie Howard's Famous Stage Hit"; "The Stars of 'Of Human Bondage' Reunited For The First Time"; based on the play by Robert E. Sherwood; about an educated hobo, a pretty waitress, and a desperate criminal all interacting at a remote cafe) starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Charlie Grapewin, Humphrey Bogart (as Duke Mantee), Dick Foran, Genevieve Tobin, Porter Hall, Paul Harvey, Joe Sawyer, and Adrian Morris. Note that Humphrey Bogart is 4th billed, and was not pictured on many of the posters! He had begun acting on the stage in the 1920s, but to no real success. In 1930 he got a Hollywood contract at Fox Pictures, but he had little success there, and they released him after two years. He returned to the stage, and in 1936 finally was noticed in the small but vital role in the stage production of this classic play, where he appeared with Leslie Howard. Howard was signed for the movie version of the play, and he insisted, over studio objections, that Bogart be cast as well (he sent a telegram to Warners that read "No Bogart, no Howard"). Bogart never forgot this great kindness, and he much later named his daughter "Leslie". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Remon X. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Uruguayan herald! Please note that Uruguayan heralds, like Spanish heralds, were printed in large quantities, and then sent to individual theaters in Uruguay, and they would have the backs of them overprinted or stamped with their theater name and specific play dates. But because a movie might play in Uruguay for a period of a year or two (traveling from theater to theater), there is no guarantee that the date overprinted on the back of the herald is the same as the date that the herald was first printed (and the date that the movie first played in Uruguay). We strongly suspect that most movies did not reach Uruguay until a year or two after their first release in other countries, but we can't say for certain. Therefore, we don't list the date overprinted on the back of a herald as the date of the herald (or the date of the movie's first release in Uruguay) unless we know from some other source that the later year was when the movie first played in Uruguay. If it is important to you that the date on the herald is the same date as when the movie first played in its country of origin, then please look at our image of the back of this herald to see if there is a different date printed on it.
