A Linenbacked Special Poster (measures 22" x 29 3/4" [56 x 76 cm]) (Learn More)

Children's Book Week, the 1939 RKO advertising poster ("Film classics from the world's best books"; "Coming to the screen of your local theatre!") encouraging children to read classic books during the November event, and featuring images of several books that RKO was adapting into films (and would be released in late 1939 and 1940). The highlight of the poster is a wonderful and different image of the soon-to-be-released Walt Disney cartoon animation feature of Pinocchio, and other books shown include: Anne of Windy Poplars, Pinocchio, Allegheny Uprising, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tom Brown's School Days, and Little Orvie! Note that it appears that Deerslayer & Ivanhoe were book adaptions that were planned by RKO but were ultimately never produced.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this really cool tie-in poster was made in November 1939, three months before Pinocchio opened in theaters. We have never seen it before, and we would imagine it is incredibly rare. We don't know how it was used or displayed, but it may well have been in libraries or movie theaters, or both. Best of all, it has a completely different image of Pinocchio, Figaro, and Jiminy Cricket that we have never seen anywhere else! Note that this item is in eMoviePoster.com's special "all animation" auction! The idea for this auction began when we were consigned a remarkable collection of original 1940s Walt Disney pressbooks, mini lobby cards, and standees (and almost all of those are extremely rare ones that are hardly ever auctioned, and they almost all are in really nice condition). Once we knew we had those items, we contacted all our past consignors, and asked them to consign to this very special auction, and they REALLY came through, consigning a wonderful assortment of cartoon movie paper of all sorts. Buying from this special auction gives you an incredibly rare opportunity to obtain some of the finest cartoon animation movie paper we have ever seen, and all of them will have new owners when these auctions close, because all start at $1 with no reserve. Many of these items will likely not be auctioned again for many years to come!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was folded once in each direction. It had paper loss at the top center, extending into a small part of Pinocchio's hat and the tiniest bit of his hair. Otherwise, it had minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
