A 1956 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55" [99 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound, the 1945 Alfred Hitchcock (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) amnesia romantic psychological suspense thriller ("This is love!"; "Complete... Reckless... Violent!"; "Forever ...Irresistibly Spellbound!"; "Irresistible their love! Inescapable their fears!"; "The Maddest Love that ever possessed a woman"; "These two together to hold you"; "Screenplay by Ben Hecht"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; a strange story of an amnesiac in a hospital who is discovered to be posing as a doctor, but when the doctor is found dead, a female psychiatrist, who has fallen in love with him, tries to find out who he really is and who really killed the doctor; the surreal dream sequences in this movie were designed by Salvador Dali!) starring Ingrid Bergman (billed as "Ingrid Bergman's First Picture since winning the Academy Award"; as a psychiatrist!), Gregory Peck, Michael Chekhov (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Leo G. Carroll, Donald Curtis, Rhonda Fleming (in her first real role, as a nymphomaniac!), Norman Lloyd, John Emery, Regis Toomey, Addison Richards, and Art Baker. Note that Rhonda Fleming was just 22 and had not had any real parts before being cast in this movie. But when she learned she was a "nymphomaniac", she said "I didn't even know what a nymphomaniac was. My mother and I had to look it up in the dictionary."! Artist: Anselmo Ballester Important Added Info: Note that oddly, after this movie was first released in Italy in 1948, it was then quickly re-released THREE TIMES in the 1950s (in 1954, 1956, and in 1959)! Apparently, it was EXTREMELY popular in Italy during the 1950s! We auctioned this poster in our March 2015 Mini/Major Auction as a 1954 re-release, and we were later able to determine that it is actually from the 1956 re-release, and the buyer from that auction returned it to us when we told them this two year difference. So now, we are re-auctioning it, correctly identified as being from the 1956 re-release. Note that prior to our first auctioning it in March, we had never had this re-release poster with wonderful different artwork of Peck and Bergman by Ballester before (and of course, this is that same poster, so it is still the only example of this great poster we have ever seen)! Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Part of each blank border was trimmed off. The poster had tears and paper loss on all the foldlines, including tears in Peck's forehead and a 6" razor cut in the center of Bergman's cheek. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed by a talented professional, and you can see signs of the above defects, but the poster will display really nicely on the new owner's wall!
