Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More)

Java Head, the 1934 Thorold Dickinson & J. Walter Ruben (NOT the renowned poster collector, who spells his name differently!) English interracial Asian romance romantic melodrama starring Anna May Wong, Elizabeth Allen, Edmund Gwenn, Hilda Campbell-Russell, and Frances Carson. Note that this story had previously been filmed under the same title in 1923, with non-Asian actress Leatrice Joy in "yellow face" makeup. There were dozens of similar interracial Asian romance movies in the 1920s, and the lead actress was always played by a non-Asian. This movie is the only of its sort that I am aware of where a real Asian actress played the lead role (but it should be noted that they preserved the moralistic tone of the story, where the Asian commits suicide to save her husband's honor.)
