An Original Italian Piece of Movie Artwork (measures 16 3/4" x 23 1/4") (Learn More) Sylvia Scarlett, the 1935 George Cukor Europe romantic smuggling embezzling crime comedy (based on the novel by Compton MacKenzie; about a father who goes to England to escape charges in France, he brings his daughter with him but disguises her as a boy and they successfully go on a crime spree with no one recognizing them until the girl meets a handsome young man and falls in love!) starring Katharine Hepburn (in the title role as Sylvia Scarlett), Cary Grant, Brian Aherne, Edmund Gwenn, Robert Adair, and Princess Natalie Paley (she was a Russian noblewoman who had a claim to being a Princess, but the Russian Revolution ended that; she married a Frenchman and appeared in a handful of French and U.S. movies; later, she moved to America and lived there until her passing in 1981). Note that as noted above, Katharine Hepburn masquerades as a boy in the early part of the movie, and being a dedicated thespian, Miss Hepburn actually had her hair cut short, because wearing a wig would have detracted from the quality of her performance! Artist: Anselmo Ballester Important Added Info: Note that this is original artwork created by Anselmo Ballester to advertise this Katharine Hepburn movie. While we are sure that it is original art created by Ballester many years ago, there are several important uncertainties about it. The first is that we can't say for certain what the art was used for (or possibly intended for). We can't find any Ballester posters for this title, but that is not odd, since Italian posters for pre-World War II movies are beyond rare. It is very possible that this was created for the Italian one-panel (it seems to be the right dimensions), but it also could have been created for a different sized poster, or even for some sort of advertising. The second is we can't say exactly when it is from. The IMDb says that the first release of this movie in Italy was in 1938, but we can find no Italian posters from that release, and it is quite possible this was created for that 1938 release, but it is also possible it was created for a 1940s re-release (we would be very surprised if it was created after the 1940s). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Please do not bid on this original art unless you can accept these uncertainties. Also note that this will have to be sent in a large flat package that measures approximately 19" x 25". Condition: good. The artwork is on a heavyweight poster board that measures 16 3/4" x 23 1/4". It has two stains in the top left background area. It has white paint in Hepburn's nose and below her nose, but that appears to be in the painting. It has small brown dot stains scattered throughout. They are of various sizes (see our super-sized image). The artwork was framed and there is darkening and staining on the back of the poster board (see our images). Obviously, one could have this artwork restored, but bear in mind these defects before bidding on this extremely rare original artwork. Learn More about condition grades
