Date Sold 3/24/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A 1950 Realart Re-release Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) House of Frankenstein, the 1944 Erle C. Kenton Universal monster horror thriller ("All together...!"; "Frankenstein's Monster! The Wolf Man! Dracula! The Hunchback! The Mad Doctor!"; "Based on a Story by Curt Siodmak"; the sixth Universal Frankenstein movie, and this was the first "all-star" movie, with all of its best monsters brought together in a single movie!) starring Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr. (as Lawrence Talbot, the Wolfman), John Carradine (as Dracula), J. Carroll Naish (as Daniel, the hunchback), Anne Gwynne, Peter Coe, Elena Verdugo, Lionel Atwill (Atwill must have had a terrible agent that he ended up behind Peter Coe, and Elena Verdugo in the billing!), Michael Mark, Frank Reicher, Charles Wagenheim, William Edmunds, Belle Mitchell, Sig Ruman, and Glenn Strange (as "Frankenstein's monster"). At least Atwill did better than poor Glenn Strange, who played the Frankenstein monster, and didn't even receive billing! Also, is it just me, or is it the height of insensitivity that a "hunchback" was treated as a monster on a par with Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolf Man? Also, why in the world did Glenn Strange not get billing on the posters? NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that the borders on this poster appear to be fairly narrow compared to other posters of this period, and one might think that the poster has had its borders slightly trimmed, but actually, the poster measures 27" x 41" and has NOT been trimmed. Condition: good. The theater that used this poster had an employee write "PREVUE TONIGHT" in the top yellow background area (the employee spelled "preview" as we wrote it above). It appears to have been written in a black crayon, but it is difficult to tell for sure. They then again used the poster at the regular showings and they put a long piece of tape over that area, but it is almost completely in the yellow background. There is a pencil mark at the right end of the taped over area that extends to the edge of the monster's chin. There is a second slightly diagonal vertical foldline that runs alongside the regular one. There is an area of paper loss in Carradine's forehead above his right eyebrow and separation and very tiny paper loss in the center of his forehead. There are some tiny vertical tears in the rest of the bottom horizontal foldline, which runs through the monsters' heads. The poster was once attached to a wall with small pieces of scotch tape evenly spaced on the back of the borders, and that tape was long ago removed, leaving slight tape stains and slight surface paper loss on the back of the poster, but it has little effect on the front. Clearly, this poster has a lot of defects, but they are truthfully all pretty minor (except for the snipe, which must be removed by a professional or a talented amateur, and they would then need to erase or touch up the words under the snipe), and after linenbacking by a talented professional, the poster will look great, and it will require little paint restoration anywhere in the image, except for the small hole in Carradine's forehead (and possibly in the area under the snipe, which is almost completely in the yellow background)!
