7 Original Vintage Theatrical Hand-Colored Movie Lobby Cards (measure 11" x 14") (Learn More)

The Bells, the 1926 James Young silent murder insanity melodrama ("Sir Henry Irving's masterpiece"; about a man who is offered a wonderful chance to improve himself in life, but to do so, he must commit murder, and he does so at Christmas time, and after that, whenever he hears bells, he is reminded of the Christmas bells chiming while he killed the man, and he is slowly driven insane and confesses his crime) starring Lionel Barrymore, Lola Todd, Eddie Phillips, Otto Lederer, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Caroline Frances Cooke, Lorimer Johnston, and Boris Karloff (as The Mesmerist!). Note that because the title of this movie is that of one of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poems, and because the plot is very similar to Poe's "The Tell Tale Heart", many people, including us, have wrongly assumed that this was based on Poe's work; but actually, it was based on a play written in 1867; when the play was translated into English, it was titled "The Bells", because of their importance to the plot!

Important Added Info: Note that this is set of hand-colored cards. In the days of silent movies prior to the invention of good quality full-color printing, studios would have lobby cards printed in black and white and then amazingly would hire women to hand-color the cards one at a time (apparently labor was very cheap at the time)! So, each card is colored slightly differently, and the coloring is never a perfect match.

Condition: good to very good. most of the cards have small border chips, creases, small stains, and smudges in the blank borders; some have a lesser number of smudges, stains, and creases within the image area; the card with the man in blue uniform standing next to the woman in the red dress has scratches in the lower part of the image
