An Original Vintage Linenbacked French World War II Poster (measures 31 1/4" x 41 1/4" [79 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) En 6 Mois (literally translates to "In 6 Months"), the 1943 French World War II (WWII) propaganda poster created by German-controlled Occupied France (under the Vichy government) to try to incite the French people against the Allies. The poster has an Eric Castel art of many bombed areas of France (bombed by the Allies), and a tagline that translates to "In six months, the Anglo-American Air Force killed 3,112 French men, women, children, wounded 5,228 people, destroyed 25 hospitals, 44 churches, 118 schools, 31,177 houses". The Nazis were trying to promote the idea that U.S. and English bombers were recklessly killing innocent French civilians and they produced posters like these in countries they occupied to reinforce that idea. Note that Vichy France is the common name of the French State headed by Marshal Philippe Petain during World War II. It represented the unoccupied "Free Zone" in the southern part of metropolitan France and French North Africa. From 1940 to 1942, while the Vichy regime was the nominal government of France as a whole, Germany militarily occupied northern France. The Vichy government remained in existence, but as a de facto client state of Nazi Germany. The Vichy government was suspended in late 1944 when the Allies liberated all of France. Artist: Eric Castel Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had creases, scuffs and some tiny bits of surface paper loss on portions of the folds and it had some extra partial foldlines near to the regular ones. It had some tiny bits of paper loss in the center of the top two horizontal folds and in the far right of those same two folds. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed on to a thin linen with slight restoration to the folds. It is slightly lifting from the linen in the bottom right corner, but that could be easily reattached by any restorer, or certainly one could choose to have the poster re-backed.
