Appears in Vintage Hollywood Posters 7 CATALOG SOLD OUT The image at right appears in the auction catalog we published as shown above and was sold long ago and we do NOT have it available for purchase. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (measures 15" x 40") (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Paris, the 1935 Lewis Seiler France Asian detective mystery crime thriller (based on the characters by Earl Derr Biggers) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Mary Brian, Thomas Beck, Erik Rhodes, Keye Luke, Dorothy Appleby, John Miljan, and Henry Kolker. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Montgomery Campell Studio Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "long" Australian daybill from 1935. Before World War II (WWII), Australian daybills were this size. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). good to very good. There was a large piece off of the top left corner of the daybill, but fortunately it was entirely white blank paper. There were tears and some paper loss across the top center, but fortunately that also was blank white paper. There was a series of small holes beginning to the right of the "E" of "CHARLIE" and running down to the bottom border (including a few in the right edge of Chan's image). There were some tears, smudges, and tiny areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. The expert restorers at Studio C masterfully repaired the damaged areas of this poster and replaced the missing blank white paper. It was so expertly done that I doubt virtually any collector could tell except by staring at the restored areas from inches away! Truthfully, there was not that much actual restoration within the artwork (much of the holes fell in the solid blue area). The poster really looks wonderful, and I would think any collector would be proud to display it on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
