An Original 1936 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 33 1/4" [60 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) A Night at the Opera, the classic 1935 Sam Wood screwball musical opera romantic comedy starring the Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx as Otis B. Driftwood, Chico Marx as Fiorello, and Harpo Marx as Tomasso), Kitty Carlisle (as Rosa Castaldi), Allan Jones (as Ricardo Baroni), Walter Woolf King (billed as "Walter King"; as Rodolfo Lassparri), Sig Ruman (as Herbert Gottlieb), and Margaret Dumont (as Mrs. Claypool). Note that MGM added a romantic plot to the Marx Bros. typical screwball comedy, and it really adds to the movie, as Carlisle and Jones have real chemistry together, and their songs are excellent. Of course, this is also the movie that has the Marx Bros.' most famous comedy scene, the "stateroom" scene, plus the great scene of Groucho and Chico attempting to sign a contract! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned this poster once before, and that was 23 years ago, when it auctioned for $2,530! The art on it is unsigned, but it certainly looks very much like the work of Al Hirschfeld, who did most of the U.S. posters for this movie. But because it is unsigned, we don't want to say for certain that it is Hirschfeld art. If anyone knows for sure either way about the artist, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had some faint scuffs and unevenness, mostly in the solid black areas (most notably in Groucho's mustache and eyebrows, and Chico's eyebrows, but also slightly in other parts of the poster). It likely had something to do with the black ink they used. It had a tiny tear in the upper right blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed. The scuffs in the black areas are truthfully only noticeable when the poster is tilted to the light (and is likely true of all examples of this poster). When viewed in a normal way, the poster looks great and will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall! Learn More about condition grades
