An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Captain and The Kids, the 1938 animated animation cartoon comedy short stock poster ("They're in the movies now!"; "In their cartoon hit"; "Based upon The United Features comic 'The Captain and The Kids'"). These shorts were based on Rudolph Dirks' comic strip of the same name and featured the voice talents of Billy Bletcher (as The Captain) and Mel Blanc (as John Silver). You might remember this comic strip as being called "The Katzenjammer Kids", which it was originally called, but in 1914, the creator, Rudolph Dirks left the Hearst newspaper that owned the rights, and he started a new strip, first called "Hans and Fritz", and then changed to "The Captain and the Kids", while his Katzenjammer Kids strip was continued at Hearst by a different cartoonist (both strips would run for many decades). This series was MGM's first self-produced series of cartoons, starting in 1938, and were directed by William Hanna, Bob Allen and Friz Freleng. A total of 15 of them were made over the next year, and then the series was canceled, at which point Freleng returned to Warner Bros, where he had worked previously. Note that this poster does not have a large blank area where the specific title of the film being shown could be overprinted or a snipe applied, but there was a background area below the words "IN THEIR CARTOON HIT", and we have seen examples of this poster with different titles overprinted on top of that background area. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was printed in 1938, but that it was overprinted with the title of a 1939 The Captain and the Kids cartoon, "Petunia Natural Park". What IS linenbacking?
