An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 1/2" x 31 1/2" [60 x 80 cm]) (Learn More) L'idole (released in the U.S. as "The Idol"), the 1948 Alexander Esway French sports boxing corruption melodrama (about a lumberjack who becomes a boxer, and he has much success, but then he learns that many of his wins were paid for, and he quits rather than stay in such a dishonest profession) starring Albert Prejean, Yves Montand, Suzanne Dehelly, Yves Deniaud, and Danielle Godet. Note that Yves Montand had a minor movie role when he was 20, but then World War II started. He had two minor roles in 1946, but then had this starring role in 1948, which started him on a very long and successful career! Also note that this movie was made one year before The Set Up, and 8 years before The Harder They Fall, two boxing movies with very similar plot lines, and it predates both of them, and one suspects the screenwriters of those movies were familiar with this movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Pierre Pigeot Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie! Also note that there were still major paper shortages in France right after World War II, and few posters were printed, and most were recycled. This is an extremely rare first release French poster from 1948, which we have only auctioned once before, and that example has been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tears and areas of paper loss around the crossfold and 2" above and below that area. It had some tiny paper loss on the rest of the folds and some small tears in the borders. It had a foreign stamp in the top left. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
