An Original Vintage Folded Italian Political Campaign Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Gran Circo Internazionale (literally translates to "International Grand Circus"), the 1953 Italian political poster (with a tagline that translates to "When I say jump, you jump!") created by the Italian Liberal Party (P.L.I.), featuring art of Georgy Malenkov, a Soviet politician who succeeded Joseph Stalin as leader of the Soviet Union, as a circus ringmaster whipping several political figures and ordering them to jump through paper hoops with the words "Political Strikes", "Peace Offensive", and "Assault Brigades" on them, while men hang from nooses in the background. The Italian Liberal Party (Partito Liberale Italiano or PLI) was an Italian liberal (and later a conservative) political party which was founded in 1922 and dissolved in 1994. The party was re-founded in 1997 and re-took its original name in 2004. A knowledgeable collector tells us that, "When Georgy Malenkov took power in Russia in 1953, the Italian Liberal Party, which had become far less influential than previously, fired this rather convoluted pot-shot at him, comparing him with the recently deceased Stalin, and mocking the influence Malenkov apparently wielded over the Italian leaders of the time." There are a few small tears of varying lengths around the edges and there are a few light creases scattered in various areas but they are not very noticeable or distracting.
