An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Argentinean Movie Poster (measures 29 1/2" x 43 1/4" [75 x 110 cm]) (Learn More) Le baron fantome (released in English-speaking countries as "Phantom Baron"), the 1943 (not released in the U.S. until 1977) Serge de Poligny French romantic love triangle fantasy melodrama (with "dialogue" by Jean Cocteau, who also has an important cameo role; about the daughter of a Count who disappeared years ago, and she was brought up along with a foster sister, and both women may be in love with the son of the gamekeeper; one day, the Count's mummified body is discovered hidden on the estate, and many secrets are revealed) starring Jany Holt, Alain Cuny, Odette Joyeux, Andre Lefaur, Gabrielle Dorziat, and Jean Cocteau (in a cameo role!). Note that this is a fascinating movie! It was made in France during World War II when it was occupied by Nazi Germany, and although Cocteau is solely credited for the "dialogue", the movie seems to be greatly influenced by him, so perhaps he took a more significant role; there are dream sequences and surreal sequences involving sleepwalking. First release posters from it are extremely rare, not surprising, since it was made in France during World War II when there were huge paper shortages, and we have never auctioned a first release French poster! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Roberto Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had paper loss at the top crossfold and small paper loss at the other two crossfolds. It had tears and small areas of paper loss along all the folds, with pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges. It had an additional horizontal fold 4" from the top of the poster and a 2" tear in the man's nose, extending into the background to the right of it. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
