An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Long Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 15" x 39 3/4" [38 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) Mammy, the 1930 Michael Curtiz romantic love triangle murder musical comedy melodrama ("Story and Songs by Irving Berlin"; about a blackface singer in a vaudeville show who is in love with a girl who is more interested in someone else, and the singer ends up framed for the murder of that guy, and he escapes, and has many adventures while trying to prove his innocence) starring Al Jolson, Lois Moran, Louise Dresser (in the title role as Mammy), Lowell Sherman, Noah Beery Sr., Hobart Bosworth, Tully Marshall, and Mitchell Lewis. Note that after "The Jazz Singer", Al Jolson made "The Singing Fool" and "Say It With Songs", which were both pretty simple movies, trading on the popularity of "The Jazz Singer". For this, his fourth movie, Warner Bros. went all out and hired Irving Berlin to write the songs, and assigned their ace director Michael Curtiz to the movie, and unlike the earlier three, it has a clear plot that is unrelated to the many songs (although the songs are placed where they serve as commentary on the movie's plot). The movie was filmed with two 2-strip (red and green) Technicolor sequences, and for many years, those were thought to be lost, but they were discovered mostly intact and what was found was restored and the movie has been shown almost completely as it was in 1930. Davies to create a beautiful stone litho of Jolson close up in blackface playing the banjo and also performing with his troupe. Perhaps they were afraid of the somewhat dark plot of the movie, because they used the tagline "NOTHING BUT HAPPY SONGS - and frolicsome comedy", which does not seem to describe the movie well, and they did not mention Irving Berlin (likely because he was far better known in the U.S. than in Australia). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had minor wear on the foldlines. It had two slightly diagonal creases running across the entire poster, one starting 1/2" below the right end of the bottom foldline, and the other starting 1/2" below that, and they are almost entirely in the background area, except that the bottom one goes through the top of the veil of the lady at second from left. There is a small circular area of paper loss between the two folds in the background area below the "Y" of "BEERY" and some small tears on those folds. There are a few areas of paper loss in the lower left blank border (solely blank white paper was affected). Other than the above, the poster is in pretty nice condition, with almost no defects other than those noted above. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
