eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 2a0642 SUPERMAN linen part 1 Belgian 1950 different Jiel art of Kirk Alyn in red costume, ultra rare Date Sold 4/17/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1950 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14 1/4" x 21" [36 x 53 cm]) (Learn More) Superman, the 1948 Spencer Gordon Bennet & Thomas Carr science fiction (sci-fi) comic book superhero serial ("A Columbia Serial"; "Rocketing Into A Mighty Adventure!"; "Challenged by treachery!"; "Racing toward doom!"; "By arrangement with National Comics Publications, Inc."; "Based on the Superman adventure feature appearing in Superman and Action Comics magazines, in daily and Sunday newspapers coast-to-coast and on the Superman radio program broadcast over the Mutual Network.") starring Kirk Alyn (in the title role as Superman/Clark Kent), Noel Neill (who later reprised her role as Lois Lane in the TV show), Carol Forman (as "Spider Lady"), Tommy Bond (as Jimmy Olsen; best remembered as Butch the bully from the Our Gang series), Pierre Watkin (as Perry White), Wheeler Oakman, Nelson Leigh (as Jor-El), Luana Walters (as Lara), Virginia Carroll (as Martha Kent), and Ed Cassidy (as Eben Kent). Note that Superman was created in 1938 as a comic book hero, but it took ten long years for a movie to be made depicting him (perhaps moviemakers were deterred by the expensive budget required to have Superman perform his great feats of strength and flying!). This item is from that very first movie, the serial entitled "Superman"! Republic Pictures had tried to make a Superman serial in 1941, but DC wanted more money than they were willing to pay, and they ended up making a Captain Marvel serial instead. Two years later, they made the first Batman serial, and it would not be for five more years before they finally made this serial! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jiel Important Added Info: Note that this serial was released in Belgium in two feature films. The first one was not labeled part 1 (which seems very deceptive, since it would end without the movie having an "ending"!). The second one does have "EPOQUE 2" on it. We have only auctioned one example of this part 1 poster and two examples of the part 2 poster in all our years of auctioning. The only other time we auctioned another example of this part 1 poster, it sold for $1,909. Both have unusual images of Superman, and this one has him wearing a mostly red suit!
UPDATED 03/29/2022: Note that we have updated the Condition information. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster has surface paper loss in Superman's cape by his arm. It also had a few tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss on small parts of some folds, with a few tiny tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well-backed but the restorer did not address the surface paper loss in Superman's cape (perhaps because he did not realize it was not part of the printing). Any talented restorer could touch up that area without re-backing the poster, but bear this defect in mind before bidding on this very rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
