Date Sold 4/16/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 28 1/2" x 42" [72 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus was started in 1907 by animal importer and trainer Carl Hagenbeck and Ben Wallace. The show was very successful and many famous performers began their career with the show, including the legendary Emmett Kelly and a young Red Skelton. Unfortunately, the circus suffered a long series of tragedies, including three train wrecks and a flood which killed and injured hundreds of performers and animals. Hagenbeck later created the modern zoo with animal enclosures without bars that were closer to their natural habitat, and founded the Tierpark Hagenbeck zoo in Hamburg, Germany. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this circus poster (which is likely from the mid-1930s, perhaps circa 1934 or 1935)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had minor wear on the folds, with some tiny areas of paper loss and creases scattered in the image, more so in the top area. It had some tears and tiny paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
