14 Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More)

Le Chagrin et la Pitie (released in the U.S. as "The Sorrow and the Pity: Chronicle of a French City Under the Occupation"), the classic 1971 Marcel Ophuls (the son of director Max Ophuls) French/Swiss/German World War II (WWII) historical documentary (about French collaboration with Nazi Germany when they were occupied during World War II) featuring interviews by Marcel Ophuls with Frenchmen who lived through World War II, including Georges Bidault, Raphael Geminiani, Charles Braun, Henri Rochat, and Marius Klein. Note that the film runs a massive 251 minutes (and this was classically parodied in "Annie Hall", where obsessive compulsive Woody Allen can't go into the movie a few minutes after it started!).
NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
Important Added Info: SUPER IMPORTANT! THOUGH ONLY EIGHT OF THE STILLS ARE PICTURED, THE HIGH BIDDER ON THIS LOT WILL RECEIVE 14 STILLS FROM THIS MOVIE (but realize that on some of these lots with 9 or more stills there may be a few duplicates, mostly on post-1960 lots)! We realize there is an element of gambling to this, but we made only a small effort to find the best stills in these lots, and, if you have any willingness to gamble at all, you may find that you get some great stills that were not pictured! Please do NOT bid on this lot unless you can accept that you are only seeing eight of the stills.

UPDATED 04/20/2016: Note that a knowledgeable collector identified these previously unknown stills as being from The Sorrow and the Pity (Le Chagrin et la Pitie), and we have updated the auction accordingly.

Condition: very good.
