eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 3r117 TARZAN THE MIGHTY linen Swedish '29 great Eric Rohman art of Frank Merrill & ape! Date Sold 12/9/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1929 (from the first release of this movie in Sweden) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Swedish Movie Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Tarzan the Mighty, the 1928 Jack Nelson & Ray Taylor silent jungle action adventure serial ("An original serial produced by Universal Pictures Corp. by special arrangement with Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of 'Tarzan of the Apes' and 'The Cave Girl'") starring Frank Merrill (in the title role as Tarzan), Natalie Kingston, Al Ferguson, Bobby Nelson, Lorimer Johnston (as Lord Greystoke), and Charles Gemora (as both Taug the Gorilla and Toka the Gorilla!). Note that this is a "lost" film. Also note that this serial was originally intended to star Joe Bonomo, famous strongman, but he was injured working on a different movie, and he was replaced by Frank Merrill, who had a fantastic physique, but in this movie, he wore a very modest outfit that covered most of his torso! Also note that this movie was supposedly based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "Jungle Tales of Tarzan", but it took great liberties with the plot. Tarzan finds a pair of brother and sister castaways on a jungle island, and he rescues them and brings them back to civilization. Finally, note that starting in 1929 and continuing into the 1940s, Charles Gemora played gorillas in many movies, likely because he owned a gorilla suit, and could do a somewhat convincing job portraying a gorilla. Just a few years later, Ray 'Crash' Corrigan would also start playing gorillas, and no doubt they competed for roles in every movie requiring a gorilla! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Eric Rohman Important Added Info: UPDATED 12/04/2014: Note that a knowledgeable collector pointed out that this poster is for the 1928 film "Tarzan the Mighty" (first released in Sweden in 1929) and NOT "Tarzan The Ape Man" as we initially mentioned. We have updated the auction accordingly. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had a 9" tear in the right of the top border (going through the "N" of "TARZAN", with tiny surface paper loss at the bottom of the tear and a tiny bit in the background next to Tarzan's hand. Otherwise, the poster was in really nice condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
