We don't know of ANY 24-sheet from King Kong surviving from any of its releases over the years, and this 1952 re-release was from just 20 years after the movie was made, and it has a great full-color image. There are just a few famous horror posters where only one example is known, but there is always the possibility (no matter how remote) that another example will be discovered. But surely that is unbelievably remote in the case of THIS poster, since so few 24-sheets from the 1950s survive! If you want to own an incredible poster that no one else has (and no one else is likely to ever have), then this is the poster for you! Note that this 24-sheet is one of a remarkable group of six 24-sheets (and one English 30-sheet) that we are offering in seven separate auctions. These posters (often referred to as "billboard posters") were always pasted to walls or billboards when they were used, so the only ones that survive are the few that didn't get used at the time. But VERY, VERY few 24-sheets survive from any movie from before 1990, because no one thought to save them, and the unused ones were almost always trashed. To give you a sense of how very rare they are, we have held over 1.2 million auctions, and of those, around 75 of them were for 24-sheets, and only a dozen of them were from before 1960! So not only are the seven billboard movie posters offered here extremely rare (and some may be the only remaining example in existence), but they are also some of the very small number of billboard movie posters still in existence period! Note that this twenty-four sheet was printed in 12 sections designed to overlap. This 24-sheet poster was folded in a way that makes it resemble a tri-folded six-sheet (only much larger, of course, as there are many more sections). But the length and width of the folded 24-sheet is just about the same as that of a folded six-sheet or three-sheet. This means that this 24-sheet needs to be sent in an oversized flat package, which will measure roughly 16" x 36", and approximately 2" high, and it will cost more to send than a regular sized package. Condition: good to very good. The poster was definitely used, because there are pinholes around each section. There are some tears and tiny areas of paper loss on parts of some folds (including in Wray's neck and in Kong's arm), and small paper loss in the bottom border, and there is a tear above the paper loss that extends into Armstrong's neck and cheek, and ends in his ear (see our image). There is brown staining scattered in the bottom border, slightly extending into the image (see our image). But the sections of the poster are not particularly fragile, and it is remarkable that they have survived at all! The colors are bright and certainly, any talented restorer can linenback this poster and perform restoration to the above defects. After it is backed, I certainly hope it is displayed in a museum or other place where lots of people congregate, because it is truly remarkable to see in person! Learn More about condition grades
