An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11" x 17 1/4" [28 x 44 cm]; 28 pages) (Learn More) The Petrified Forest, the classic 1936 Archie Mayo romantic crime thriller ("From Leslie Howard's Famous Stage Hit"; "The Stars of 'Of Human Bondage' Reunited For The First Time"; based on the play by Robert E. Sherwood; about an educated hobo, a pretty waitress, and a desperate criminal all interacting at a remote cafe) starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Charlie Grapewin, Humphrey Bogart (as Duke Mantee), Dick Foran, Genevieve Tobin, Porter Hall, Paul Harvey, Joe Sawyer, and Adrian Morris. Note that Humphrey Bogart is 4th billed, and was not pictured on many of the posters! He had begun acting on the stage in the 1920s, but to no real success. In 1930 he got a Hollywood contract at Fox Pictures, but he had little success there, and they released him after two years. He returned to the stage, and in 1936 finally was noticed in the small but vital role in the stage production of this classic play, where he appeared with Leslie Howard. Howard was signed for the movie version of the play, and he insisted, over studio objections, that Bogart be cast as well (he sent a telegram to Warners that read "No Bogart, no Howard"). Bogart never forgot this great kindness, and he much later named his daughter "Leslie". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this pressbook (9 years ago and 11 years ago), and both of those examples had cuts, while this one is complete and uncut! Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note that for the past 18 months, we have auctioned one of the most extraordinary collections of pressbooks ever assembled! What made it so extraordinary is that it contained lots and lots of extremely rare pressbooks, mostly from the 1930s and 1940s, including many that we had never auctioned before. In our last few regular auctions, we auctioned most of the last of this gigantic collection, and now, in this April Major Auction, we are auctioning the very last of them, and one quick look tells you that "we saved many of the very best for last"! This is your FINAL opportunity to buy from this extraordinary collection! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle. It appears all the pages were separated at the spine, and someone put a series of staples down the spine to hold all the pages together. There is some wear around the edges of the covers and uneven darkening on one interior page, where a newspaper clipping was inserted. Learn More about condition grades
