Green professional gambling poker playing crime melodrama ("The picture you've been waiting for"; about a Greek barber who has a remarkable talent playing poker, and that lets him achieve great success gambling illegally, but pretty women are his downfall) starring Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Evalyn Knapp, Ralf Harolde, Noel Francis, Margaret Livingston, George Reed, and John Larkin (Reed and Larkin played train porters). Sadly, this movie was the only time these two legendary actors (Robinson and Cagney) appeared together in a movie, even though they spent a large part of their career at the same studio, Warner Bros.! Perhaps Warner Bros. thought they were such major stars that they shouldn't be in the same movie, or maybe there were "ego" issues on the part of either or both stars (I wonder who would have been top billed!). Also, note that this was Edward G. Robinson's very first movie after "Little Caesar", and James Cagney's second movie after "Public Enemy", and it is quite likely that this was in production before either or both movies were released, so neither star may not have yet achieved stardom while this movie was being made. Marty was hired in 1972 to evaluate the entire collection of W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971), who was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919, until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore. Marty Davis was the first person with a background in film history and collectibles to examine the archives. He worked for three to four hours a day, for six months, and his compensation was his pick of the archives. This still is from the W. Ward Marsh archives, and it was stamped on the back by Marty Davis to indicate that it came from this legendary collection. Condition: good to very good. The stills was used in a magazine, and someone used a sharp object to trace around Robinson's face and hair (this was often done, because it enhanced how the photo appeared in the magazine), but it is mostly only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light.
