An Original Vintage Theatrical English Movie Campaign Book (English Campaign Book; measures 10" x 15"; 12 pages) (Learn More) Song of Freedom, the 1936 (released in the U.S. in 1938) J. Elder Wills English Hammer black African American opera musical melodrama ("Robeson In His Most Memorable Role!-Cast of Thousands In $500,000 Epic!"; about a black English dockworker who has a great voice, and becomes a major opera star, but then he finds a family medallion that causes him to go back to Africa to try to trace his family's origins) starring Paul Robeson, Elisabeth Welch, Esme Percy, Robert Adams, and George Mozart. Note that we have had trouble finding much information about the American release of this movie. It was one of the first productions of English Hammer Films (yes, THAT Hammer Films, which later became famous for its horror movies!), but it is difficult to know when it was released in the U.S., and by what company. The IMDb says it was re-edited in 1938 and released by Treo Film Exchanges, but we have never heard of that company, and the IMDb says it solely released three movies, including this one, over a three year period, which sounds doubtful! The only U.S. movie paper we have ever seen from this movie is a one-sheet and a lobby card, and both have "Song of Freedom, Inc. presents" printed on them, and we think those are surely from the first U.S. release, which did occur in 1938 (verified by 1938 newspaper ads). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare country of origin Campaign Book for this English movie. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of the Campaign Book, plus an image of any supplements or heralds (if there are any included with this Campaign Book), but of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single Campaign Book we are selling (plus any supplements or heralds)! Also note that this Campaign Book is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased Campaign Books partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a Campaign Book that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good to fine, NO CUTS. There are minor creases and scuffs throughout the covers of the campaign book, but it is in otherwise very nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
