An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Warren Beatty was born Henry Warren Beaty in Richmond, Virginia in 1937. His sister, who is three years older was born Shirley MacLean Beaty, but when she entered show business she changed her name to Shirley MacLaine. Beaty (he added a second "t" when he entered show business) was a star football player in high school, but his sister's success encouraged him to pursue drama, and he turned down football scholarships to study drama, first at Northwestern University and then with Stella Adler in New York City. He appeared in a lot of off-Broadway productions and TV shows, and in a single Broadway play, where he was nominated for a Tony. One of his most notable early roles was as rich teen Milton Armitage on TV's The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. In 1961, he starred (opposite Natalie Wood) in his first movie, the excellent Splendor in the Grass. His next few movies were not as successful (he might have had a hit in What's New Pussycat, but he clashed with Woody Allen and quit the production), but 1965's Mickey One, while it did not do well at the box office, teamed Beatty with director Arthur Penn, and they re-teamed in 1967 with Bonnie and Clyde (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), which was a huge success, and made Beatty a superstar. The 1970s was a great decade for Beatty, for he made seven movies, including both commercial and some critical successes, such as McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Parallax View, Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film). But this success led him to produce, direct, write and star in Reds (for which he won the Best Director Academy Award, and was nominated for Best Actor Academy Award role), and the movie was not very commercially successful. He then took six years off, and returned in the major bomb, Ishtar, where he and co-star Dustin Hoffman each took roles against their "type". It looked like Beatty's star years were winding down, but he returned strong with Dick Tracy and Bugsy (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film) in 1990 and 1991. But that revived success was short-lived, for his Love Affair and Bulworth did not do very well at the box office, and his 2001 Town & Country is said to have lost more money for its backers than any movie ever made, and Beatty has not made another movie since! Of course Beatty is as well known for his off-screen romances as for his on screen career (did Carly Simon write "You're So Vain" about him?), and he frequently had affairs with his co-stars, even the married ones. He seemed to be certain to never marry, but in 1992 he married Annette Bening, and they are still married and have four children! As of 2021, Warren is still alive at the age of 84! Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Warren Beatty! Also note that this still measures 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm]. Finally, note that this still appears in every way to be original U.S. release EXCEPT that there is one very tiny line of French type in the lower right. It reads, "IMPRIME AUX ETATS-UNIS D'AMERIQUE". A collector has told us that he believes this means the still was printed for use in areas that included French-speaking parts of Canada, but that it WAS printed in the U.S., and that makes complete sense to us (and we have seen this on stills from the 1940s through the early 2000s, so it has certainly been done for an extremely long time)! So it is an original still from , but it was printed partially for use in French-speaking Canada. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this autographed item is part of a remarkable collection. In our last two all-signed auctions, we auctioned hundreds of items from this collection and now we are auctioning 213 more items (plus signed index cards that have a different note on those)! In the 1970s, our consignor was a teacher who taught a film class, and he also part-time ran the local movie theater (and he saved all the presskits from the movies the theater showed). Starting in the late 1970s through the late 1980s, he wrote to famous celebrities, and enclosed an 8x10 from his collection, and he wrote a literate personalized letter, talking about his work as a film teacher, and discussing his favorite movie by that star. He received signed photos back from a good percentage of the people he wrote to, and if the people simply sent him a stock photo back, he did not save it, but if he felt the autograph was genuine, and if they added a personalized note, then he did save them. In the late 1980s, he pretty much stopped sending letters and photos, simply because he was just too busy. So this photo (and the vast majority of the other photos we are auctioning for this consignor) were obtained in the late 1970s or 1980s, through personal correspondence with this star. This is of course excellent, because back at that time celebrities were not selling their signatures nearly as much, and many of the stars were pretty forgotten and were happy to get letters from people like our consignor! He of course does not have any "Certificates of Authenticity", but he only kept ones he felt were surely authentic, and those are the ones we are auctioning. However, bidders can certainly compare the signatures to known examples on the internet to judge for themselves. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: very good.
