An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Autographed Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

Belle of the Nineties (some movie paper was prepared with the working title "It Ain't No Sin"), the 1934 Leo McCarey riverboat entertainer romantic comedy ( "Mae West.... in the picture the whole country is talking about"; about a sexy cabaret entertainer who has a tough boxer boyfriend, but who attracts the attention of every man who sees her) starring Mae West, Roger Pryor, Johnny Mack Brown, Katherine DeMille, John Miljan, Libby Taylor, and Duke Ellington's Orchestra. Note that the movie's working title was "It Ain't No Sin", but the censors refused to allow it, and it was changed, even though some posters exist with that title. They tried to change the title to "St. Louis Woman", but the residents of that city protested, and their next title was "Belle of New Orleans", but they received similar protests, and they settled on the non-controversial "Belle of the Nineties"!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Mae West! Our consignor purchased the poster from a Christie's London auction where it was noted that the poster was from "The Stanley Caidin Collection". Mr. Caidin was a Hollywood attorney who was a legendary early collector of early movie posters, long before most collectors entered the hobby. Also note that first release U.S. posters from this 1934 Mae West movie are extremely rare. We have never auctioned a poster larger than a half-sheet, and we have previously auctioned the other style half-sheet (twice, and the last time it auctioned for $1,560), and we have never before auctioned this style half-sheet! Note that because this poster has restoration and is very fragile (see below), we will send it in a large flat package to the winning bidder, unless they insist on it being rolled, which might not be wrong to do if it is going to a restorer for re-backing.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had darkened. It had never been machine folded, but it had many uneven vertical creases scattered throughout and several other small creases as well. It had pinholes, creases, tears, and some tiny paper loss around the edges. Someone backed the poster onto linen, but did no real restoration, although just backing it has made the above defects less distracting. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. After it was backed, it was roughly handled, and there is now an 11" crease in both the poster and the linen (starting in the to border in the middle of the "E" of "MAE", and it runs through the center of the image, and the poster has cracked along parts of that crease. If I owned this great poster, I would surely have a talented restorer remove it from the old linen and properly re-back it. However, bear in mind its defects and the cost of restoration before bidding on this very rare poster.
