An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 39 1/4" x 59 1/4" [100 x 150 cm]) (Learn More)

Captain Blood, the classic 1935 Michael Curtiz (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Jamaica romantic swashbuckling high seas pirate ship ocean adventure thriller ("Caps the all!"; "By Rafael Sabatini"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Errol Flynn (in the title role as Irish doctor Peter Blood), Olivia De Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Ross Alexander, Guy Kibbee, Henry Stephenson, Robert Barrat, Hobart Cavanaugh, Lionel Atwill, George Hassell, and J. Carrol Naish. Note that Errol Flynn had had a few bit parts prior to this movie, but Robert Donat dropped out of this movie at the last minute, and Warner Bros. decided that Flynn was ready for stardom, and they sure were right!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this Meloy Bros 40x60, and that was 13 years ago, when it sold for $3,138! However, that poster was mounted to a very heavy board, and therefore had to be sent to the winning bidder in a very large flat package. But the owner of this poster did something very special with it! When he acquired it, it was on a heavy board (it might have been one of the three we previously auctioned), and he gave it to an expert restorer, who removed it from the heavy board and linenbacked it, which means that it can now be rolled and sent in a tube that measures 42" long. This also allowed the restorer to perform restoration to the poster, so it displays really well, which gives it a big plus over the ones on a heavy board! WE HAD TWO OTHER MELOY BROS POSTERS FROM THIS SAME CONSIGNOR THAT WERE ALSO LINENBACKED, AND THEY SOLD FOR $3,037 AND $550. He had two others linenbacked, but no more, and we are auctioning them in two separate auctions, so this is the last chance to get one of these posters that has been fully restored and linenbacked.

Please click on this link to read more about Meloy Bros. posters (but keep in mind that this version is linenbacked and NOT on a heavy board as mentioned in the link).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, when the poster was created, it was mounted on a heavy board. Someone removed that board and then mounted it onto linen, but otherwise did very little restoration, and the poster mostly didn't need it. It had some tears, smudges, and scuffs scattered down the left, to the left of the figures, and a much lesser amount in the stars' figures. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster displays pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the restoration when you look at it close up, although it is more in the left of the poster, as we note above.
