An Original Vintage Theatrical Stage Play Poster (measures 20 3/4" x 27 3/4" [53 x 70 cm]) (Learn More) Midnight in Chinatown, the circa 1903 W.O. Edmund stage play production ("W.O. Edmunds's spectacular melo-drama"; "The sensational death scene"; about crime, murder, and drugs in the Chinatown opium dens of San Francisco, California). This was a popular stage play at the turn of the 20th century, and it at least ran from 1900 to 1908 (at that time, stage plays would travel the country, performing in local opera houses and theaters, but the growing popularity of movies greatly cut into the market for such stage plays, and by the mid 1920s, they were mostly gone). Beautiful stone litho posters were made for plays like these without reference to actors or locations, and that way the touring companies could use those posters at every location! The posters almost always measured around the size of a U.S. half-sheet, but with a vertical orientation. We found a reference on the Internet to a 1903 production of this stage play that starred Fred H. Jarvis, Frank Meredith, Ella Mayo, Ned Risley, and Ed H. Buchanan. If anyone knows more about this play, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have seen a few single examples of turn of the century stage play posters, and they are printed on a thin paper stock, and measure roughly the same as this poster (see above). This particular poster was dry-mounted onto a heavy backing board. We don't know when that occurred, but we imagine it was not in 1903, but it was also not done recently. Condition: good. Someone dry-mounted the poster to a heavy board (see above). It had been folded across the middle and it had a long slightly diagonal crease down the top half of the center of the poster. It had tears, stains, and paper loss around the edges, with tiny paper loss in parts of the borders. In spite of its defects, the poster still displays pretty well just as it is, and of course, a talented restorer could remove the poster from its backing, and after restoration, which would primarily be in the borders, the poster will look incredible!
