An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Glass Slide (measures approximately 3" x 4") (Learn More) Sutter's Gold, the 1936 James Cruze California gold rush mining adventure melodrama ("The screen's thundering drama of men mad with the greed for gold!"; "The thundering drama of gold rush days!"; "Based on Blaise Cendrar's Novel"; a highly fictionalized biography of the man who found gold on his ranch, which led to the famous 1849 California gold rush!) starring Edward Arnold (in the title role as John Sutter), Lee Tracy, Binnie Barnes, Katharine Alexander, Montague Love, Addison Richards, John Miljan, Harry Carey Sr., Bryant Washburn, Robert Warwick, Gaston Glass, Russell Hopton, William Janney (billed as "W.M. Janney"), Sidney Bracy, and Nan Gray. Note that there is an asterisk after Edward Arnold's name in the credits, which leads to an explanation that he is in the movie "by arrangement with B.P. Schulberg". It had been bought by Universal in the 1920s for Sergei Eisenstein (who finished a treatment for the film), but it was never made. William Faulkner also did a treatment of the story for Howard Hawks in 1934 but it never progressed further. Universal surely later wished they had forgotten all about it, because their 1936 movie cost $2,000,000 to make, 20 times the average Universal movie of the time, and did terribly at the box office. Also note that at the same time this movie was made, there was a German version released, called "Der kaiser von Kalifornien", which altered the story somewhat. Important Added Info: The slide does not have a cardboard holder, but rather there is black tape around all four edges (front and back), typical of older glass slides. When we auction slides that have a cardboard holder, we provide a separate image of how the cardboard holder looks, but when we auction slides with the black tape (like this one) we only provide the scan of the glass slide image, because that really is about all there is to see. Condition: good. There is "fogging" between the two panes of glass in the upper center. It does not show in our scan, and a talented amateur could separate the two panes and clean off the fogging and then re-attach the panes. Please do not bid on this glass unless you can accept this defect. The theater that used this slide wrote the days the movie was playing in the play dates section at the bottom of the glass.
