An Original Vintage Art Portfolio (measures 19 1/2" x 29 1/2" [50 x 75 cm]; contains 6 poster prints) (Learn More) Alberto Vargas was a Peruvian artist from the 1920s to the 1980s. In the 1940s, he created a sexy "centerfold" for each issue of Esquire Magazine (they would fold out, and Hugh Hefner borrowed the idea in the 1950s for his Playboy Magazine, except he used photos instead of artwork), and his pin-up art was frequently used as "nose art" for many military aircraft during World War II. Vargas is often considered one of the most famous of the pin-up artists, and his paintings have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. He is often reputed to have worked as a poster artist on films such as Ziegfeld Follies, and The Sin of Nora Moran (which is frequently named as one of the greatest posters ever made). He passed away in 1982 at the age of 86. Artist: Alberto Vargas Important Added Info: Note that Playboy made a number of Alberto Vargas calendars in the 1940s, but they really went "all out" in creating this "Playboy portfolio" in 1964 (it was advertised for sale in the December 1964 issue, and also in the March 1965 issue, which had a Vargas cover), which contains six prints, because each print measures 19 1/2" x 29 1/2", which of course makes them incredibly suitable for framing. The portfolio came in a printed blue paper sleeve, and we are sure that very few of these sleeves (or likely complete portfolios) survived! Note that this item contains some nudity, so we have placed a white bar over those areas for those who are bothered by such images. Of course, the actual item does not have the white bars. Condition: very good. The blue cover has some stains, with tears around the edges, and the cover piece is mostly separated from the rest.
