WITH THE MARINES AT TARAWA 1sh '44

Lease from Hershenson/Allen Archive

An Original Vintage One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh) (Learn More)

With the Marines at Tarawa, the 1944 Richard Brooks & Louis Hayward War World II (WWII) war documentary short ("Thrill to the fighting Yanks!"; "An official Marine Corps Film"; "Photographed by Combat Photographers of the Second Marine Division"; "Distributed by Universal Pictures Co. for War Activities Committee - Motion Picture Industry"; about the harrowing battle between the U.S. Marines and the Japanese for control of the Pacific island of Tarawa) featuring Admiral Harry Hill, General Julian Smith, General Holland Smith, and narrated by William Lundigan. Note that this documentary short won the Academy Award Oscar for Best Documentary Short. It was co-directed by two Marines, Richard Brooks and Louis Hayward. If those names are familiar to you, it is because Brooks went on to become a really major director of the 1950s and 1960s, and Hayward, who was born in South Africa, but ended up n the U.S. Marines during World War II, had a major career as an actor in the 1940s and 1950s! But they both got their start with this documentary short, which was each of their first film.
