Auction History Result Lot #: JW 072 JOHN WAYNE linen stock 1sh '34 John Wayne on horse, Randy Rides Alone! Date Sold 7/10/2004Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Appears in John Wayne Movie Posters at Auction CATALOG SOLD OUT The image at right appears in the auction catalog we published as shown above and was sold long ago and we do NOT have it available for purchase. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Stock One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) one of four John Wayne stock posters used by theaters to advertise re-released (and in some countries, the first release) John Wayne cowboy western movies that he made for Lone Star Pictures in 1933 and 1934. The first of these was made by Lone Star Pictures itself in 1934, and has an artwork image of a cowboy on a horse that does not resemble John Wayne. The second of these was made in 1939 when John Wayne achieved major stardom with Stagecoach, and distributors rushed to re-release his many 1930s B-westerns to theaters, and this poster shows a recognizable John Wayne on a rearing horse with an inset image in the top right corner. There are two other Lone Star stock John Wayne posters that we believe date to the mid 1940s, when he had even greater success with his World War II movies, and one has him standing full-length by a tree, and the other has a closer image of him along with Gabby Hayes. Note that it appears that the middle 1930s Lone Star John Wayne movies were very popular and desired by theaters right after they were made, and that Lone Star likely created this stock poster soon after John Wayne made "Blue Steel", because the image on this stock poster is the same as that on the first release "Blue Steel" one-sheet, except that it does not have full credits at the bottom and the title is in a "block" font. We have seen stock posters like this for "Blue Steel" and "Randy Rides Alone", and there are likely ones for the other Lone Star titles as well. Yet the first release one-sheets for those movies are beyond rare (some of them are impossible to find), and these stock one-sheets are themselves also rare (only a few of each have surfaced). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). good to very good. The poster had tears and extra creases along all the foldlines, and small paper loss at the crossfolds. There were creases and scuffs in the solid background areas, and pinholes in the corners. It appears that the poster sustained damage since it was linenbacked, as there is some surface paper loss in the middle of the top foldline and in the left of the bottom foldline and also in several places around the edges of the poster in the blank borders. This poster is a great candidate to be re-linenbacked. A talented restorer could re-mount the poster, and touch up its basically minor defects, and the poster would end up looking great, and it would not have much paint restoration.
