A Linenbacked Chinese Commercial Poster (made to be sold directly to the public; measures 19 3/4" x 26 1/2" [50 x 67 cm]) (Learn More) Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung) was a Chinese Communist revolutionary and politician from the 1940s to the 1970s. He was the head of the revolution that led to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, leading the country until until he passed away in 1976 at the age of 82. His book, "Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung" (known in the West as "The Little Red Book") was first published in 1964, and some sources say it sold 6.5 billion copies (but no one can say for sure, although virtually every Chinese citizen had to have a copy during the 1960s!). If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: This poster is undated, and the characters under the image translate to "In 1945 Chairman Mao in Yan'an". We don't know for what purpose the poster was created, or exactly when, or how it was used or distributed, but our best guess is that it is a commercially sold poster, made in the 1960s, at the height of Mao's popularity. It has tiny writing in the bottom right which includes an "ISBN" number, so it could be related to the sale of one of his many books. It had a 1 1/2" tear in the left border that once had tape on the back of it, and minor wear around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking.
