An Undated (probably 1924) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 15" x 40" [38 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Easy Street, the 1917 Charlie Chaplin silent romantic slapstick comedy short (the Tramp goes into a church and steals the collection box, but when he sees a beautiful girl, he puts it back, and becomes a policeman, and is assigned to a really tough street known euphemistically as "Easy Street", and he cleans it up and wins the girl) starring Charles Chaplin, Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell (as The Bully), Albert Austin, and Lloyd Bacon. Note that the phrase "on Easy Street" (referring to "having it made") is an expression everyone "knows", but its origins are somewhat murky. Some sources say it came about in the early 1700s (with no citation), but while all sources agree it became popular around 1900 to 1905, most disagree as to where it originated from at time! Charlie Chaplin grew up near a street named "East Street", and it was in a rough neighborhood, and that may have served as the inspirations for this film's "Easy Street" (and of course Chaplin used the term ironically, for the street was anything but "easy" to live on). In today's world, with so many billionaires, there are lots and lots of people who have truly arrived on "Easy Street"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: fair to good. The poster was likely found under a floor, and it has a great deal of light scuffing and faint staining scattered throughout the image, including over most of Chaplin's figure, but fortunately, much less on his face. It also has a pinhole in the bottom background area and tiny paper loss at the top of the barrel, with tiny paper loss 1 1/2" to the left of that. It has a stain in the "H" of "CHAPLIN" and some small stains in the upper right border and top blue area. Obviously, this poster can be restored, but bear in mind its defects and the cost of restoration before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
