A Linenbacked French War Poster (measures 30 3/4" x 46 1/4" [78 x 117 cm]) (Learn More)

Emprunt de la Defense Nationale (literally translates to "National Defense Loan"), the 1938 or 1939 (see below) French World War II (WWII) War Bond poster (with taglines that translates to "Subscribe. To save the peace and your freedoms") featuring Paul Colin artwork of Marianne (the national personification of France) holding a French Republic shield to protect farms and factories. Note that there were at least 3 versions of this poster produced by different printers. There is a version with a white bottom border printed by "Joseph Charles" which is dated 1938. There is an undated version with a white bottom border printed by "Bedos", and an undated version with a blue bottom border printed by "Schuster". The undated versions seem to be from 1939 but one source gives a date of 1945. Also, it is interesting to note that as one is actually dated 1938, it would seem that France was preparing for hostilities in case the "appeasement" policy did not work.
Artist: Paul Colin
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the top crossfold and some creases, smudges, scuffs, and darkening on parts of the folds. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed it onto a thin linen with slight excess, and after it was backed, it was roughly handled, and it acquired creases in the excess linen, but also some creases in the bottom of the left border and a few scattered in the poster. If I owned this poster, I would surely have it removed from the thin linen and properly re-backed, and after slight restoration, it will display wonderfully (or of course, it could be displayed as it is).
