A 1927 Re-Release Theatrical Movie Herald (measures 3 1/2" x 5" [9 x 13 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More)

Quicksands, the 1923 Jack Conway silent Mexico romantic crime drug smuggling melodrama (written by Howard Hawks; a complicated story of a lieutenant in the army who is sent to the Mexico border to stop a gang of drug smugglers; he sees his girlfriend in the place where the smuggling occurs, and he thinks she is involved, so he plans to resign, but then he learns she has been kidnapped, and he goes to rescue her, but he is captured too, and then the U.S. Army shows up and rescues them both, and it turns out she was an undercover government agent!) starring Helene Chadwick, Richard Dix, Alan Hale Sr., Noah Beery Sr., Dick Sutherland, and Richard Arlen. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. Also, note that this is a fascinating movie, on several accounts! It was produced by Howard Hawks, and it was the first movie he produced, and he would not direct a movie for three more years! It is a mystery how he came to be the producer of the movie, given that he had not done anything significant prior to this time (and he was only 27), but perhaps the answer lies in the fact that he is credited with writing the movie, and perhaps he would not let the movie be made unless they let him be the producer. Also interesting is that Oliver Hardy is listed as an unbilled screenwriter on this movie, and we don't know how that came about! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info: Note that there is a credit on this herald that reads "Retitled, reedited and reissued", with a 1927 copyright date. If only all re-releases had this notation on them!
